BOUT AT PAHIATUA ROY FORWARD DEFEATED. [ Per Press Association. ] PAHIATUA, Aug. 21. At a successful boxing tournament, the chief event, Ted Oxley (Pahiatua) the Manawatu featherweight champion, had a comfortable win over Roy Forward (Wanganui featherweight champion). GAME JOHNNY LECKIE PETE SARRON PAYS TRIBUTE This is Pete Sarron’s tribute to Johnny Jeckie, after he had sent the New Zealander down to defeat in that epic fight last month:— 11 Why, I guess that boy is just the toughest and gamest guy I ever did fight. Say, I ain’t never hit any fellow so hard or so often, before without him quittin’ or going down early. I’ve battled plenty of tough babies, but I gotta hand it to Leckie. ’ ’ PURDY FOR AUCKLAND BOUT WITH HAY NEXT MONTH The match committee of the Northern Boxing Association, at a meeting last week, decided to send an invitation to Charlie Purdy to return to Auckland and fight Artie Hay, welter-weight champion of New Zealand. Purdy has accepted the invitation and will leave Australia on August 30. The bout will probably take place on September 9. Purdy has now grown into a welter-weight, states the Sun, and with his additional poundage and improved punching ability he should make Hay do his best to win. The Northern Association has been decidedly unlucky in its endeavours to make matches, the invitations to overseas boxers, having been rejected for one cause or another. It has not been staged in Auckland, but it now looks as though a match is definitely set for the beginning of September.
