WAIKATO RIVER

FLOODED FARM LANDS. [ Pei- Press Association 1 HAMILTON, May 11. The silting of the Waikato River and the consequent flooding of farm lands were brought to the notice of the Minister of Lands by a deputation at Rangiriri last evening. It was stated that the bed of the river haa been rising for years and the rate of siltagc had increased as the result of the Arapuni hylro-electrie w’orks. Some of the best farm lands were being lost through waterlogging. A member of the Waikato County Council contended that the proposed drainage of 90 square miles of swamp necessitated attention to the river into which all the drainage empties, Captain Roose, of the river shipping firm, supported the appeal in the interests of navigation. The Minister promised to lay the matter before the Minister of Public Works.
