PRODUCING PORK
SUCCESSES AND FAILURES A report of the lowa pork production contest for 1928 shows that the most successful contestant averaged to produce 2151 b. of pork from 10 sows; tin least successful contestant got only 734 lb. from each of 22 cows in ISO days. From th>‘ report of a similar contest in Minnesota it is learned that the winner produce 2097 lb. of pork per litter of 10 sows; the lowest record was 63!b. average from 19 sows. One outstanding difference was the number of pigs raised per litter. Averaging the two winners, nine pigs were raised per litter, whereas the two lowest producers averaged only 5.92 pigs, per litter. It is seasonable to suggest, that correct feeding of the pregnant sows together with adequate preparation for taking care of the pigs when they arrive have an important bearing on the number nf pigs raised per litter.
