WINTER RACING STEEPLECHASE SEASON OPENS SPLENDID CONTESTS AT MARTON FIXTURE The 1929 winter racing campaign in the Dominion was launched at Marton on Saturday, the venue this year being changed from Hawera as a result of the Marton Club deciding to run fixture in the winter with one of their spring fixture dates. That the move was a successful one was amply demonstrated on Saturday, for large fields, good racing and splendid finishes were provided, and an increase in the attendance and the totalisator turnover compared with the spring meeting’s concluding day, was recorded. Next Thursday and Saturday the Egmont Racing Club’s meeting wiil be held at Hawera, while the following week the Wanganui winter iixture will take place, these two gatherings leading up to the Great Northern meeting at Ellerslie.

MARTON_SURPRISES |! MATU WINS STEEPLECHASE FORDELL STABLE DOUBLE (By 4 ‘Kestrel") Glorious weather prevailed for the ; Elarton meeting and bright sunshine all day made it seem more ’ike a summer fixture than the opening of the cross-country campaign. The track was firm and the going good, as the times recorded in the majority of the events will indicate. As the Marton Club has not held a winter meeting with which comparison may be made, it only remains for i the totalisator turn-over to be eompar- ; ed with the second day of the spring | fixture, which was the day transferred I by the committee hen they decided on | the experiment. The totalisator turn- ! over on Saturday was £15.441. which ; is £l9l greater than the £13,480 put ! through on the second day of the I 1928 spring meeting. It must be conceded that the committee were justi- [ field in their experiment. Apparently a • winter meeting at Marton will become I an established fact. With the large amount of cross-coun-try racing in view considerable interest , was shown in the display of the ’chas- I ers in the Marton Steeplechase. Ln- • fortunatly, eight of the thirteen start-* ers failed to complete the course and it I was ieft to the 1 rentham-trained Matu i to catch the top-weight, Puwhero, over the last quarter-mile and beat him' home. The winner was not in the pic- : tore until the last five furlongs and fin- ; ished well. He is engaged in the I’gmont i?t .cplcchase next Thursday. Puwhero ,carrying 211 b. more than • Matu, did well to finish where he did | after bring the pilot from the five-fur- j long post. Star of the East, the favourite. did not give a very convincing display of fencing and one obstacle in partieualr that he evinced a dislike for was the hencoop. Mountain Crag fell when he looked likely to play a part in the finish, while Hollycombe was also going well when he crashed and

broke a shoulder, this Lriging to an end what promised to be a useful career across country. Brigadier Bill and his rider parted company too early in the piece for an expression of opinion as . to the chances of the All lied gelding, i while the others did not impress. The Open Hurdles was contested by several candidates for honours over the small sticks later in the season, and it <an be said that, though lied Bank won, the honours were with lied Fuchsia, for the top-weight carried his 12.2 like the good horse that he is and then only went under by half a length. Kilburn ran a fairly good race but the favourite, Nucleus, was a disappointment. The principal event on the flat, the Crofton Handicap, went down to the credit of the favourite. Iluanui, who scored convincingly from the second favourite, Papatu, with the unlucky Imperial Spark in third berth after a splendid finishing run. The winner is owned by Mr W, McA. Duncan, who also provided the winner of the open sprint, Limited. Both are trained at Fordell by F. Tilley, who has been having a great run of success this season. Keddar was runner-up to Limited and Broad Acre filled third berth. Quite a promising hack was seen out in the dual winner, Taranto, a six-year-old gelding by King Mark out of the Birkenhead mare Martina, dam of King Mart and Auctioneer. Trained by his owner at Dannevirke, Taranto was confidently backed for the first Dash Hack, paying a good price, and came out in the final event, carrying a re-handicap of 71b., to get the judge’s verdict in a very tight finish. The conduct of the meeting was of the high class usually associated with Marton fixtures, and the secretary, Mr Arthur Way, had everything running with the smothness of well-oiled machinery. The handicapper, Mr H. Coyle, had the satisfaction of knowing that his adjustments were responsible for several very close finishes, while he had the winners so well concealed that only two actual favourites were winners. The starting was done by Mr C. O’Connor, while Mr R. H. Aidworth occupied the judge’s Lox. Red Bank Makes Amends. Home Made and Kilbrouk were the defections from the Open Hurdles, with which proceedings tarted, and Nucleus (£390) was preferred to Red Bank (£3IS) and Red Fuchsia (£250 .. Mandarine went t 0 the front from a good start and Red Bank and Nueleus&followed him to the first fence. Down the straight Red Bank was the pilot for Red Fuchsia. Koaua. Mandarine, Nucleus and Kill.urn, hut running to the five furlongs Mandarine dashed into the lead again, with Red Bank close up and Red Fuchsia nearest of the others. Red Bank again assumed the lead across the top and turned for home ahead of Red Fuchsia, Kilburn. Mandarine and Nucleus. In the run to the judge Red Bank held oft’ Red Fuchsia’s challenge to win nicely by half a length. Five lengths away was Kilburn, with Mandarine next and Nucleus fifth. Taranto Scores Easily. Eight started for the first division of the Dash Hack Handicap, in which Inflame (£391) was better backed than Naselle (£324), with the eventual win ner, Taranto, rather neglected with £154 on his chances. When the tape* went up Bank Note showed out fron Inflame, Taranto, White Ringlet, Goot

Cheer and Marenga, but when they had settled down Inflame was out in front of Taranto, Bank Note, Marenga, Good Cheer, Vinella and Naselle, and the order was practically unchanged as they turned for home. At the distance Taranto headed Inflame and went on to win by a length and a-ha]f, with Bank Note half a length away. Good Cheer was fourth and Vinella, Naselle and White Ringlet next to finish. Some Acre by a Head. Joy Germ was sorted out by backers as the best bet in the second division of the Dash Hack, being entrusted with £642, but Callapat (£429) was also supported. Some Acre (£123) was sixth in the order of betting. Mademoiselle, Hopwood and The Jack Jumper were slow away and Wyeford went to the front, followed by Joy Germ, Latakia, Plane, Some Acre and Calla'pat, and across the top Joy Germ was jin front of Wyeford, Some Acre, Hopwood and Callapat. Joy Germ turned ! for home ahead of Some Acre. Callajpat and Hopwood, but over the final stages Some Acre finished well and I beat Joy <Wm by a head, with Hopwood two lengths away, ahead of Calla|pat. Latakia was fifth, followed by 1 Wyeford and Plane. Matu Springs a Surprise. I Maunga was already scratched for I the Marton Steeplechase and Mandairine was the course defection. Star of | the East (£370) and Mountain Crag | (£290) were best backed, with Hollycombe (£181) and Puwhero (£169) next I iancied, and Matu (£113), eighth i choice. Marcellus came down at the initial obstacle and passing the stands l the first time Frisco Jack was showing ' the way to Ban juke, Star of the East, I Mountain Crag, Trouble, Brigadier Bill, I Puwhero, Vexatious and Sou o’ Mine, j At the first of the double Brigadier Bill i crashed and when they reached the ■ obstacle at the five furlongs Son o' ! Mine lost his rider. Trouble was the ! next to throw out, losing his chancft at ; the brush that saw Marcellus go Down the straight the second time

i Frisco Jack, Star of the East, Mountrain Crag, Puwhero, Vexatious, Hollycombe, Breaman and Matu was the order, but the leader tossed out at the first of the double brush. Hollycombe was the next to go, coming down at the five-furlong brush, and the next , [fence saw Mountain Crag oome to ' (grief, when he was leading Puwhero, (Star of the East and Vexatious. Vex[atious ran off at the penultimate fence , ami Puwhero led over the final obstacle, ' joeing followed y Matu and Star of [the East. Once they landed into the ’ [.straight Matu asserted himself and , jwent on to pass the judge eight lengths (ahead of Puwhero, who was a similar ' (distance in front of Star of the East, (the favourite just lasting long enough • to beat Braeman for third money. Banjuke, a long way back, was the only ’other to finish. Hollycombe broke a /shoulder and had to be destroyed. Three in a Line. 1 ' ; Eleven were saddled up for the Wini. ter Hack, and Disrank (£309), Skyrider >,(£287) and Briar Root (£273) carried > the money, with Shrewd and Royal i Acre also supported. Hard Gold was t slow away and Mystum, who had once - broken through the tapes, showed the . way out of the straight to Skyrider, I Royal Acre. Metellus, Warfille, Disfrank and Briar Root. At the six furt ilongs Skyrider was the *• leader, being - I followed by Mystum, Metellus, Royal ' 'Acre, Metellus, Briar Root and Shrewd. E I but in the run home Royal Acre caught 1 ■ Skyrider, who, however, hung on to ) intake a dead-deat of it. A neck away t J was Shrewd, w ho also finished well, I ’and Metellus, Briar Root, Mystum, Disi rank and Aurora Borealis followed in s (that order. f First Favourite to Win, j i • .Shining Armour and Briar Root were r ’the detections from the Crofton Handi- ’ 'cap, for which most money came for ! Ruanui (£549), but Papatu (£408) was " also well supported. Royal Damon and : Blimp were next best backed. StarI board Light sorted himself out as they I ;raced out of the straight, being followe ed by Royal Damon, Blimp, Borsalene, Ruanui, Manly, Nukumai, Imperial | [Spark and Papatu in that order. "The deader put a break on the field going "into the back, being six lengths clear at the six furlongs, where Royal Damon, Blimp, Ruanui .nd Borsalene e ! followed in close order. As they ran h across the top Starboard Light was •s (coming back to the field, but he was k still four lengths ahead of Royal i- 'Damon, Manly, Blimp. Iluanui, Borsad leno and Imperial Spark. Rtyal Daiiion I- icaught Starboard Light at the entrance n 'to the straight, and then Iluanui came •t Through on the inner. Papatu and Imperial Spark joined in on the outer and o in a good finish Ruanui prevailed by •I 'three-quarters of a length, Papatu k [beating Imperial Spark by half a 'f length for second place. Blimp was d .close up, fourth, and Boisalene, Royal •r Damon, Starboard Ligh£ and Manly folfl. lowed. 9 o I i- ; Limited Completes Fordell Double. j. Paleta was the only defection from 1S the Flying Handicap, which was a very even betting race, Moa Bird (£418) and Limited (£413) being separated by £5. ’Keddar (£381) and Vast Acre (£353) •n were also well supported. They raced ■h in a bunch for fifty yards and then in Limited showed out n the outside ol n- jßroad Acre, followed by DiObbin, Vast rh Acre, Keddar, and First Acre. Limited •?s was clear of the field as they crossed m the top, followed by Dobbin, Broad )d Acre, Moa Bird, Vast /.ere, Keddar and

Whcnuanui, and he turned for home a couple of lengths ahead of Dobbin, Broad Acre, Keddar and Vast Acre. Limited, vigoriously ridden, finished on well to beat Keddar by a clear length, with Broad Acre two lengths back, followed by Dobbin, Moa Bird and Whcnuanui. Taranto Wins Again. With six defections from those carded for the Farewell Hack there were still thirteen left to contest the issue. Taranto, penalised 71b. for his win in the First Dash Handicap, was installed favourite, carry £382, but heavy support for Warfille (£373), Australis (£361) and White Ringlet (£300) in the largest pool of the day saw the favourite at a great price. When the barrier went up White Ringlet set out to show the vay to Australis, Vinella and Grattan, but Taranto soon took up the running and led across the top and into the straight, followed by Australis, Warfiamc/Vinel.la, White Ringlet, Ab Baba and The Jack Jumper. A great finish saw Australis fling out a determined challenge and appear to catch Taranto, but the latter, on the rails, got the decision by the barest of margins with Warflame half a length away, third. Viaella was fourth and Grattan anti White Ringlet close up. FULL DETAILS. OPEN HURDLES (Of 175 sovs; 11/!I 1 /! miles.) 2 Red Bank, 9.7, C. Robinson 1 3 Red Fuchsia, 12.2, A.
