FREE SECTIONS
BUT GOLDEN GORSE CLEARING COSTS VARY The duties of city inspector are many and varied. He deals with rats, watches the milk supply and keeps an eye on tho erring motorist. Every day he guards the public interest, even, it seems, to clearing gorse from city sections. At Aramoho, golden blooms have developed wonderfully within the past year or so on 20 small sections totalling an acrea of about six acres, and this has given Air G. Feu more than ordinary concern. A man in Dannevirke was the owner, and notice after notice was given to effect a clearance, but the gorse grew more virile with each succedeing period until, at last, the owner appeared at the Inspector’s office. “I’m the man you’re looking for,” he declared. “Let’s see this gorse.” They went, and the owner was more surprised at the prolific growth than he expected to be. “Look here Air Fear,” he said, “Do you want a section? I’ll give you one of these if you like.” “Not on your life. I wouldn’t have it as a gift.” Nothing daunted the owner turned to the inspector’s assistant. “What about you? Would you like a section?” But Air Tipper had the same feelings as his chief. There was too much gorse. So it was arranged that tenders be called to cut the menace out and and in response to advertising 50 odd tenders were received, and 50 odd prospective contractors were shown over I the job. Their tenders ranged from £27 10s to £126. Evidently sonic bed no conception of what the work entailed. Either that or others thought tho owner of the sections might be soft. A bulky package v»as posted to Dannevirke and, in the end. the job was settled at £3O. For the time being tho inspector’s mind is at rest.
