FAT LAMBS FROM THE RIVER VALLEY
CONSIGNMENT FOR WORKS NEW COMPANY CATERS FOR SETTLERS’ WANTS The new company controlling the Wanganui River Service is showing enterprise in catering for the wants of the river settlers, and encouraging them in increased production from their holdings. Evidence of this was to be seen at Hatriek’s Wharf yesterday, when two boat loads of fat lambs, 130 in all, were unloaded prior to their delivery to the freezing works. The consignment was from the farm of Mr A .E. Davey, at Jerusalem, about 50 miles from Wanganui, and was the first to be brought down the rivar in about the last 10 years. Those interested in the future progress of the river valley are anxious to see all branches of pastoral activity continue—a forward move which is now becoming so marked—and to this end the new company is helping by offering every inducement to farmers. Large ijuantities of top-dressing are now being used on the “easy” country in the river valley, and there is every possibility of the fat lamb industry proving a substantial source of revenue for the .settlers. Yesterday’s consignment was in the nature of an experiment, but it is expected that it will be the forerunner of important developments in fat lamb raising.
