BRITISH POLITICS

FOUR BY-ELECTIONS [ British Official Wireless, f LONDON. Dec. 30. Four Parliamentary by-elections are now pending. Ono of those is in Northern Ireland, caused by the appointment of Sir Malcolm Macnaughton, member for Londonderry, as Judge of the King’s Bench. Other vacancies are caused by thc deaths of Sir George Hutchison. Conservative member for North Mid Lothian. Mr Ben Spoor. Labour member for Bishop Auckland, and Air George Warne, Labour member for Wansbeck.

Four candidates will probably contest the Mid-Lothian seat. The Scottish Nationalists have decided to nominate a candidate as well as each of thc three principal parties. There will be a threecornered contest at Wansbeck, and at Bishop Auckland, where Mr Hugh Dalton, who is at present member of Parliament for Peckham, is the prospective Labour candidate. The Labour executive has decided to invite his wife, Mrs Dalton, to contest a seat.
