SPORTS FOR WOMEN

DOCTOR GIVES ADVICE DANGER OF MIXED GAMES LONDON, Dec. 2. “A woman’s body is built like a chassis, which does not conduce to great speed or extraordinary endurance,” said Dr Edward Beadon Turner, consulting physician to Princess Helena College, and the Home of Rest, Paddington, when lecturing before the Institute of Hygiene. “Consequently,” he continued, mixed teams at hockey and lacrosse should be discouraged. Either the game is spoilt, because it is slowed down, or a woman tears herself to pieces trying to keep up a man’s pace. Such pluck and courage arc characteristically womanlike, but a woman should only compete with her own sex, and thereby improve her health. “She cannot compete on equal terms with men. Swimming affords woman the nearest approach to man’s standard, because even in these days, when fashion demands an extremely unaesthetic scragginess, the swimming girl still has sufficient adipose tissue to keep her up in the water.” Dr Turner recommended discus and javelin throwing for women.
