WIRELESS CONCERT

WANGANUI TALENT AN OUTSTANDING SUCCESS A memorable concert programme was that presented last evening at the Opera House on the occasion of the first official wire!ess Broadcast in Wanganui. From every point or view the concert was an outstanding success, and by reason of the artistry shown, the city and distnet received an excellent advertisement throughout Australasia and possibly oon icit her afield. The programme was relayed to Wellington by land wire and “put on the air” by the Radio Broadcasting Co. of New Zealand. The Queen Alexandra Band, under conductofship of Captain G. Buckley, was in excellent form, and their playing drew many congratulatory messages from ]isteners-in. The work of the supporting artists also was appreciated in no less extent. Proceeds were in aid of the Queen Alexandra Band new instrument fund, and in response to a suggestion that the “unseen audience” should contribute, and advise the Opera House by ’phone of the amount of their contributions, messages were received from Stratford, Wellington and Napier. After the opening number “Zampa” (Herold) played by the band, Mr Louis Cohen (past president of the N.I. Brass Band Association) delivered a neat address. The remainder of the programme was as follows: Fantasia, “Drink to Me Only” and “Old Black Joe,” Primary Schools’ Mouth Organ Band; solo, “The Nightingale’s Trill,” Mrs G. E. Tarrant; duet, “Solenne in Quest ’ora,” Messrs Hubert Carter and Keith Grant; cornet solo, “O For the Wings of a Dove,” Master Jack Buckley; solo, “Lament of Isis,” Mrs Leo Campion; humorous monologue, “The Soliloquy of a Safety Pin,” Mrs T. L. Sperring; solo, “Heavenly Aid,” Mr Hubert Carter; contest selection, “Scheherazade,” Queen Alexandra Band; solo, “Sparga d’ Amaio Aide,” Mrs Edna Greenwood; cornet solo, “Arbucljlenian Polka,” Mr Gordon Bergersen; solo, “Ships of Arcady, ” Mrs S. Wills; contest selection, “Tristan and Isolde,” Queen Alexandra Band; solos, “Go Not, Happy Day” and “Love is a Merry Carpenter,” Miss Vivienne Ralph; vocal quartette, “Un Di-se Ben Rammcntomi; ” “Your Little Hand is Frozen,” Mr Hubert Carter; descriptive selection, “In a Monastery Garden,” Queen Alexandra Band; humorous monologue, “Kitty O’Toole,” Air George Swan; march, “The Dawn of Freedom,” Queen Alexandra Band. The Radio Broadcasting Co. desires to place on record its appreciation of the splendid arrangements made by the Post and Telegraph Department, which enabled a perfect long-distance broadcast to be put over the air.
