MARTON DISTRICT A. & P. SHOW (Special “Chronicle” Service.) The schedules for the public schools division at the Marton Show on February £7, 1929, have been issued to all schools within the Oroua, Kiwitea, Rangitikei and Manawatu counties. Special prizes have been awerded by Mr Harold Smith for essays for Standard IV. and Standards V and VI (“Tho Tasman Flight”) the first prizes being £2 2s, second £1 Is, and third 10s 6d in each class. The schedule also contains drawing from natural objects and fashioned objects for Standards 1 to 6, brush designs for Standards 3 to 6, writing for Standards 1 to 6, lettering for Standards 5 and 6, and woodwork for Standards 5 and 6 and secondary. The entry fee has been reduced to threepence for each exhibit and entries close on Saturday December 1. Schedules may be obtained on application to the secretary, P.O. Box 3, Marton. A ROYAL WINNER. At the Royal Show at Palmerston North, Mr E. Openshaw of Marton was awarded first prize for Friesian bull calved since July 1, 1927, there being elev.en entries. The prize-winner, Dominion Koromiko, by Carnation King Matator Betty—Dominion Azalia, was bred at the Central Development Farm at Wereroa, and was purchased by Mr Openshaw at the recent dispersal sale. Mr Openshaw’s bull was also included in the Wellington Provincial group of Friesians, which secured first prize and he receives a sixth of the first prize money (£25), donated by the New Zealand Friesian Association. GENERAL NEWS. The Marton Volunteer Fire Brigade will hold a euchre party this evening. On account of the wet weather on Wednesday the cricket match between Broadway and Hunterville was abandoned. THE PICTURES. Forty-niners—tho bold adventurers who rushed to California gold fields in the middle of the last century —figure in a new way in “ The Gay Defender,’ ’ Richard Dix’ latest Paramount Picture, coming to the Marton Town Hall on Saturday afternoon and evening. Heretofore treated as heroes in screen dramas, the gold seekers in “The Gay Defenders’ are played up as villains, while Dix, in the heroic role as a native Mexican, is driven to banditry by oppression of the unscrupulous prospectors. OBITUARY Tnc death occurred last evening of Mr Otto Neumann, at his residence, Wellington Road, Marton, after a serious illness extending over several months. The deceased gentleman was a successful farmer at “Greenfields,” Marton, for many years and after retiring he took up residence in the town. The late Mr McNcumann took a keen interest in bowling and acted as honorary green supervisor for the Marton Bowling Club up to the time of his recent illness. He leaves a widow, one son and two daughters.

MARTON COURT In the Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday before ALr R. M. Watson, S.M. judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the following undefended civil cases: F. J. Connell v D. Maher £9 9s, costs £3 10s; A. M. Sims v J. Tekc £39 18s 9d. costs £3 3s 6d; H. K. Saunders v W. Hall £1 Ils 7d, costs 10s; N.Z. Commercial Association Ltd. v T. Sanson £3 0s 3d, costs £1 5s 6d. Makai te Kuru was ordered to pay T. Barton £9 Ils lid at the rate of £1 per month, in default 10 days’ gaol. L. Hakaraia was ordered to pay W. J. Francis and Co. £2l Is lid at the rate of £2 per month, in default 21 days’ gaol. T. Coleman was given judgment against E. M. Moran for £l3 2s lOd for house rent and possession of the house by November 21. In the defended cases Thomas Buchanan (Air A. Lyon) v Robert H. Weeks (Mr J. R. L. Standford) the claim was for £3B Os 2d for wages under paid. Judgment was given for £l9 18s lid.
