ASSOCIATION WORK VISIT OF AUCKLAND OFFICIAL The touring manager of the Auckland Automobile Association, Mr R. E. Champtaloup, is at present visiting this district. Discussing the activities of the Auckland Association, Mr Champtaloup remarked that the growth in the last twelve months had been phenomenal. Over 2,200 members had been enrolled, making a grand total of over 7,000. The Auckland. Association is following in the lines of the English Automobile Association, and has appointed four uniformed patrols to give assistance to members on the road. The signposting department has also enlarged its activities and a patrol has been appointed for this work. He is provided with a truck which is not only equipped to render aid to motorists in difficulties but is built primarily to erect signposts. The interior of the vehicle is designed so as to carry a bed and bedding, cooking and toilet utensils and a fair quantity of food and water. The sign-posting patrol can cover all the remotest parts of the country and has no need to seek either board or lodging, no matter what the weather may be.
Commenting on the activities of the Highways Board, the visitor expressed great satisfaction at the way in which the officers of the Public Works Department were endeavouring to carry out the instructions of the Board. Thanks were also due to those local bodies co-operating and providing improved road surfaces capable of carrying modern transport. Mr Champtaloup will be accompanied by Dr. Porritt, of Wanganui, on an inspection he will make of the Fordell-Mangamahu-Karioi Road before proceeding on to Napier and Gisborne.
