A HEAVY STORM
FREIGHTER TOSSED VOYAGE OF THE GOLDEN COAST. 1 Special "Chronicle” Service. J AUCKLAND, June 26. The first of the weil-knuwu “West” steamers to reach Auckland under her new name is the Golden Coast, from Los Angelos. When she was owned by the United I States Shipping Board ana running under the management of the American--1 Australia-Orient Lino (Swayne and Hoyt Lid.), the Gclden Coast was well known as the West Carmona. On the purchase of the fleet by the Oceanic and Oriental Navigation i'u., ne of the Matson linos, all the vessels were renamed with the prefix “Golccn,” The first voyage of the re-named steamer was marked by a three days’ battle with strong southerly and south-west-erly gales. Leaving Los Angeles on May 30, she experienced fine weather until June 19 when a strong westerly gale sprang up. The following day it chopped round «o south and blew with increasing strength. For th next two days the storm continued with unabated fury, heavy seas even breaking over the high deck cargo of timber, which began to show signs of loosening under the continual battering On June 22, however, the storm moderated without having done any damage- ___________
