KANNA AT DUNEDIN STOKEHOLD CREW PAID OFF. I Per P/eas Association] DUNEDIN, June 26. Trouble with . everal members of the stokehold crewe of the Union Company’s cargo steamer Kanna resulted in the vessel being held up at Dunedin last night. It is stated that there was some hitch between certain members of the stokehold crew nd the ship’s officers while, the Kanna was at Bluff last week. The Kanna arrived at Dunedin on Monday morning and was really to sail last night for Napier and Gisborne, via ports, but it is stated that a number of the stokehold hands refused to accompany the ship because they had been logged for some alleged offence, said to have been committed at Bluff. Last night all the members of the crew were given 24 hours’ notice of the termination of their services. The men concerned in the dispute held several conferences with the Union Com' pany’s officials to-day, but o settlement was reached, the i.*en intimating that they had no desire to retain their berths. The company then decided to pay off the stokehold section of the crew and this was carried into effect during the afternoon. An effort will be made to secure the neccssa.y men to fill the vacancies to-morrow morning, and if no further hitch occurs the Kanna will be desptached on her northern trip.
