SPIRIT OF CHIVALRY
MODERN EXPRESSION AMBULANCE AND HOSPITAL WORK The annual parade of the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade and the Legion of Frontiersmen was held at Trinity Church yesterday morning. About 150 members of the Brigade, including 4 he men’s and women’s battalions and the cadets attended under Mr J. Brine, Senior District Superintendent, and Mr G. Slight, Corps Superintendent. Among the Frontiersmen who attended were Colonel C. N. Weston, D. 5.0., Commandant- New T Zealand Command, Legion of Frontiersmen, and Captain E. D’Esterre, the founder of the Legion in New Zealand and organiser for the Southern Hemisphere. The sermon, “The Age of Chivalry,” was preached by the Rev. E. T. Cox, M.A. Taking as his text the parable of the Good Samaritan, the preacher referred to the spirit of chivalry which arose in the mediaeval age manifesting itself in a desire to go about doing good and righting wrong. He described the manner in which this spirit originated. It was, he said, purely a Christian institution, and w-is not to be found in any other civilisation. The modern expression of the former age of chivalry was to be found in such beneficent organisations as hospitals, asylums, homes; the Red Cross and the St. John Ambulance Brigade.
