CROOKS HIDE UNDER CLOAK OF INNOCENCE

CHEATING CHEATERS ’ AT THE NEW GRAND Do you remember when Betty Compson, Sylvia Ashton and Eddie Gribbon appeared in two-reel comedies as a bathing girl, a mother and a burglar respectively? They did, once, but now these ex-comedy players are seen as crooks in “Cheating Cheaters,” the latest Universal-Jewel which is the attraction at the New Grand Theatre tonight. Just plain crooks, although they hide under a cloak of innocence in the greatest comedy-drama of the season. Eddie is not only a good crook but he is a good “gag” man as well, and when he had a good idea Director Lacmmle gave him the megaphone. He is an old-time director, and at one time • luring his colourful film career ho headed a comedy company of his own with Betty Compson (who is the heroine in this latest opus of the underworld) as his leading lady. “Mother” Ashton was also seen in farce comedies and worked under Eddie in a number of pictures. This trio alone are the greatest laugh promoters on the screen. % Others who appear with Miss Compson in “Cheating Cheaters” are Kenneth Harlan, playing the masculine load, Maude Turner Gordon. K. J. Ratcliffe, Lucien Littlefield and Cesare Gravina.
