Sydney Ernest Jamieson, a seafarer, was to-day sentenced to one month’s imprisonment for brutally assaulting Constable Edward Arthur Irwin. Jamieson appeared i.t the Lyttelton Magistrate’s Court this morning. Constable Irwin stated that last evening he had occasion to arrest for drunkenness one Thomas O’Shea. Accused drew up from behind and struck witness behind the ear. Jamieson immediately assaulted him repeatedly by striking him about- the jaw, neck and throat. Witness considered that it was the most brutal assault he had ever experienced as a policeman in Lyttelton. O’Shea also assaulted him and had it not been for a total stranger who came to his assistance he would not have been able to manage both men.
