Halcombe, at Hunterville at 2.45 p.m. Notes by “Observer.” Rata maintained their unbeaten record on Saturday by defeating Marton for the second time this season. Neither team was at full strength, though Marton were the worst sufferers in this respect, Coleman in the backs and Twist the forwards being notable absentees, while Rata were without the services of G. Hartley. The score, 16 points to 8, hardly indicates the run. of Mio play as on the whole is was very even. The game between Bulls and Toko< rang! did not eventuate as Bulls could »iot raise A team on account of a number of their players being down with influenza. Athletic met Hunterville at Marton Park and were defeated by a converted try to an unconverted try. The red and blacks were unlucky on several occasions although Hunterville did most of the attacking. On two occasions Athletic went very near to having points on, first when Ledingham hit* the upright with his kick from a free and later when O’Sten’s kick hit the crossbar and rebounded into play. Shanley was the pick of the visiting backs, at times approaching brilliance. Higgins was sure and Illston did some good work on the wing. Ledingham was outstanding on the home side, time and again extricating Athletic from tight corners. Uru, too, was good on defence. Ledingham made the opening for Athletic to score, Handy running in unopposed. There was no score in the second spell, both teams being good on defence. Old Boys juniors, by defeating Halcombe last week, show decided superiority in this grade and like Rata in the senior championship have not as yet suffered a reverse. Strange to say, Hunterville in the third class also enjoy this honour, so that in all classes the leading teams have not yet had a set-back.

Bert Johnston fulfilled the critics remarks of him, being the best of the home backs in the Wanganui-Taranaki match. He is an excellent half-back and should go a long way in football. Ellery, too, was conspicuous among the forwards. Following are the tables:—

On Wedneasday Rata received a drubbing at the hands of Halcombe, the score being 19—0. Athletic journeyed to Hunterville where in an even contest they were defeated by the narrow margin of one point, the

score being: Hunterville 11, Athletic 10. Bulls visited Ohingaiti where they were defeated by the home side by 10 points to 3. Two tries and a field goal to an unconverted try.
