HARRIERS

WANGANUI CLUB BIG CROSS-COUNTRY RACE TO-DAY. The first big cross-country race of the season will be staged to-day, commencing at 3 p.m. on the Racecourse. The runners should complete the sixmiio course, ending with a lap on the Racecourse, by about 3.30 p.m. A great race should eventuate as the local men are showing good form and with Gibbons and Denford of Marton to assist should be a difficult proposition to beat. R. A. Rose, now back iu Masterton, is possibly making the trip and his presence will materially strengthen the visitors’ chances of success. The visitors, who have twenty-one runners in their team, will be welcomed at lunch at McCarthy’s Hotel at 12 noon by prominent 'officials of the Wanganui Club. After the race the runners will be handed over to those who are billeting them, and after dinner they will be the guests of the Gonville Tennis Club at their dance. Tomorrow morning will probably be devoted to a drive round the suburbs, ending with a visit to Mr R. J. Jackson’s home. The New Zealand Championships will be held on August 11 instead of July 21, as both Otago and Wellington considered the original date rather too early. The West Const Championships have been allocated to New Plymouth this year and it is hoped that this meeting will prove a decided fillip to the northern club. The steadily-increasing interest in Harrier work up and down the coast indicates that the WanganuiTaranaki Centre should be able to field a really strong and representative team for the forthcoming New Zealand Championships.
