HARRIERS

WANGANUI CLUB SATURDAY’S RUN WELLINGTON WINS SPRINT HOME Despite the attraction of the races a good attendance of harriers was on hand on Saturday afternoon. New faces were again seen out and now over twenty different runners have turned out at various times this season. The run was held from St. George’s School baths and most of the runners availed themselves of this to have a swim after the run. The Harriers’ Club wish to thank Mr Fell for allowing them to use the baths as headquarters for the day. The course consisted of two and ahalf miles out to the far end of the championship course at a steady pace; followed by a handicap run in over two miles, The w - ay out lay past Bromiley’s store, along the flat boggy land at the foot of St. John’s Hill, parallel to Springvale road, across Sandy Lane and out again at Tayforth. Road half a mile beyond St. Agnes’ Church. The latter part of the run out was steadily rising country with several steep pinches of a testing nature. For the run in the runners were Split into four equal packs and were sent off at regular intervals. The home run was over flat country apart from one stiff hill which took its toll. By the time the top of the hill was reached Wellington and Pleasants, on the limit, were still well out in front but the back-markers were up with the rest of the field. Over the last three-quarters of a mile Wellington drew away to win by 20 yards from Newton (scr.), Sexton (150yds) finishing solidly to run into third place, with Pleasants and Clark (scr.) following in that order. Bilderbeck, Fear, and Marks, all running well, are only in their first season and can be expected to improve considerably. A training run on the racecourse will be held this afternoon at 5 p.m. Intending starters are welcome and can be sure of company, wet or fine. Next Saturday’s run should be one of the pleasantest staged this season. It will be held from Mr Keith Fear’s residence, Durie Hill. Harriers are requested to meet at the Post Office corner at 2.30 p.m. sharp. Cars will then pick them up and convey them to the starting point.
