THE GIRL GUIDES [ Special “Chronicle” Service. J To celebrate their second anniversary, the first Bulls St. Andrew's Company of Girl Guides held a very large party in the Bulls Town Hall, which was largely attended by townspeople, Scouts and Cubs, the latter being under their respective officers, S.AI.K. Kemp and Akela Leader Aliss N. Wilson and Guides and Scouts from Alarton. In the early part of the evening t.nc local Girl Guides rendered various items, the chief participants being Guides Cutts, Young; Cooper, Kemp, AlcGregor, Al. and V. Jones, Kearney, ami Signal, while the Bulls and Alarton Scouts performed; hakas and the Cubs gave two songs. Air AlcKcnzie gave an exhibition of physical exercises and the Guides gave a display of physical drill, followed by an cjitr’acte entitled “Behind the Scenes,” which was greatly appreciated. The company then paraded under Captain Jones for the presentation ut stars and badges won during the year. In the absence of the Commissioner, tho vicar of Bulls presented the captain’s star, and stated that it was pleasing to note that almost all the Guides present had been in the company since the inception. The girls had shown loyalty to the ideals of guiding and had attended their meetings regularly. Captain Jones presented the badges and stars to the Guides and on behalf of the Guides, Lieutenant Kemp presented Airs Jones with a tea-tray in recognition of her services for the troop, and Vera and Afur cl Jones were given an autograph album and purse respectively. Lieutenant Kemp stated that it was greatty regretted that their captain was leaving the district because she had been a keen worker and had devoted much time and energy in organising the Guides, but she carried with her all their best wishes for happiness in her uew home. Then followed the supper and a beautiful two-tier birthday ca-.e, adorned wit.h two kewpies and two red candles was lit by the two youngest Guides, Alaisie Keats and Vera Jones. During the distribution of the cake, Captain Jones took the opportunity of thanking all those who had contributed to the success of the evening, a nd added that special thanks were due to Airs Campbell who had kindly donated the cake, and had, in addition, trained the girls for the play and .had actcrJ. as stage manager that evening. The Guides then sang “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow,” and gave three cheers. After supper games were played and the party concluded with the singing of ‘‘Auld Lang Syne.” GENERAL The ladies’ stroke competition on the Rangitikei Golf Club’s links on Vv usfnesday afternoon resulted in a win for Aliss F. Perrett, whose card read 110—34—76, Airs de Burgh who wus runner-up returned a card of 100 —22 —78. The C grade competition war won by Aliss -Amon with 105—36—L9. A combined parade of Girl Guides, Boy Scouts, and Cubs will take place at St. Aniu'Xew’s Church, to-morrow. Sunday, at —ll a.m. The A1.U.0.0.F. Lodge will hold a dance in the Oddfellow’s Hall on Monday evening. r i coming week will be a very furl one as regards amusements. On Alonday evening the Oddfellows arc holding a dunce; on Tuesdjay the Feilciing Salvation Army will give a concert in tnc I'own Hall; pictures will be shown on Wednesday evening; Thursday evening the Women’s Division of the Farmers' Union are holding a pingpong and 500 tournament in the Clifton Hall, and the Tennis Club begin their series vt dances in the Town Hall supper-room. Pictures on Saturday will complete the orgy of pleasure. A SUDDEN DEATH A sensation was caused in Burls yesterday when it became known that Air J. Hart, a well-known blacksmith of Bulls, had diroppcd dead at Flock House while engaged at his usual duties as farrier. The late Air Hart had been in business for some years in Bulls and latterly had been employed by Air W. Kearney. He was very popular throughout the district and a large number of friends will feel the deepest of sympathy with his Wittow and family. THE PICTURES The picture tells the story of Willie who works in a garage and invents a magnetic bumper to save auto tires from tacks and nails in the roadways. Willie finally rebels against the hardboiled garage owner, dresses up in hrs white pants, and hies himself to Cold Springs, a fashionable summer resort where he knows the girl of his dreams is stopping with her father. Upon arrival Willie is mistaken for a crack polo player, and is forced to enter a championship match . The embryonic polo player comes through with flying colours after a series of hilarious events. He wins the girl and also the support of lier father, an automobile magnate, who becomes interested in Willie's invention. “White Pants Willie” will be screened at Bulls tonight. To-day’s Teams.
