DEBTS TO BRITAIN
SOUTHERN STATE LOAN REPRESENTATION TO AMERICA. (A. ami N.Z.) LONDON, April 18. In the House of Commons, Air Locker Lampson, replying to Lieut.-Coloncl Howard Bury (Con.) said that the Government considered that it would not serve any useful purpose for representation to be made to the United States with reference to the repudiation of public debts by certain southern States. Lieut.-Colonel Howard Bury said that the loans were made for construction and developmental purposes, and a sum totalling £78,000.000 for principal and interest was owing to British bondholders. Air Locker Lampson «aid: “I hope you will not press the matter for the present. ’ ’ Air Somerville said that in view of the fact that America pressed the Alabama claims and the generous manner we had met America’s claims arising from the Groat War, ought not we to press the claims from the Southern States. Mr Saklatvala: “Isn’t this another case where Britain ought to semi troops to occupy the defaulting States for protection of British interests.” Cries of “sit down” was the only answer.
