At tho Alarton Court yesterday, morning before Messrs D. Ingle, J.P., and J. Alogridge, J.P., Robert Cyril Southwood, aged 28, and Arthur James Tullett, 21 years of age, were charged with the theft of two overcoats, one motor jack, one inner tube, and one hood clip of a total value of £8 6s 6»d, from a motor car belonging to Frederick Ruik of Makino. Both pleaded guilty. Constable Thompson stated that both accused were immigrants and had; been employed at the Railway Junction. The thefts were committed from a car while a dance was being held at Air Whale’s granary on Cliff Line on Tuesday evening, and the stolen goods wore found in their possession at their rooms. The police stated that thefts from motor-cars were far too prevalent in Marton and it was their intention to make an example of any case proved. In this case it seemed that Southwood, who had already served a term lor tmrglary, was the ringleader, and he ha»d! often mentioned to Tullett that they should go on a burglary campaign throughout New Zealand. The Bench addressed the prisoners at length, remarking that Tullett had been led astray by Southwood. Tullett was fined £5 and was ordered to come up for sentence any time within 12 months if required. Southwood: was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment with hard labour.
