SIX FROM NEW ZEALAND
STATE OF THE FUNDS. [ Special “Chronicle” Service. ] WELLINGTON, March 24. Though the funds of the New Zealand Olympic Council are still lower than they could wish there seems little doubt that the six athletes outside the rowing eight, who were nominated by the Committee of Precedence, which ’met in Wellington recently, will be despatched to the Olympic Games. The cash in hand now totals £1550, including the donations of £5OO by the New Zealand Swimming Association, £4OO by the Boxing Council, £2OO by the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, and £lOO each from Sir Douglas Maclean and New Zealand Truth newspaper. The general collection fund is now £350, as against £l3O a week ago. The sum of £230 has eome to hand since the Council called in collection lists. Each athlete sent to Amsterdam will cost the Council about £4OO, so that it will be seen that the condition of the fund at present makes it barely possible to despatch four representatives of the Dominion, one each from the sports of boxing, swimming and athletics, since the money donated by the governing bodies i i these fields has been earmarked for the purpose of sending away one of their own nominees. In addition, it is stated that the Railway Department, of which A, Cleverley is an employee, is inaugurating a fund for sending him away, while the effort in Gisboren to raise sufficient money to make possible Miss Norma Wilson’s presence at Amsterdam is also considered likely to be fruitful. Thus the despatch of at least six athletes seems assured, and there may even be money for the sending of one or two rowers, though the representation of New Zealand by a rowing eight is now admitted to be highly improbable. _____
