ATLANTIC SALMON
A NETTING RESTRICTION FOSTEBING THE SPORT LOCALLY. A determined effort is being made to establish Atlantic salmon in the Wanganui River, and to that end a Gazette notice of Alarch 15 proclaims it to be unlawful to use a net of any description for taking fish above the Town Bridge. Previously a net could not bo used legally above Sandy Hook.
The new move has bee-n under consideration by the Marine Department for the last six months, and has had the whole-hearted support of members of the local Acclimatisation Society.
Strange fish believed to be Atlantic salmon have been reported in the Wanganui River at various times recently, but so far none have been received by the Society for identification. Ono thing is certain, and that is that if the fish have made their appearance they have not run in large numbers, and it is necessary if they are to become established in these parts, that netting be prohibited in the meantime. This was the course adopted in the South Island rivers where the sport has been built up to such an extent that netting to a limited degree is now permissible.
