UP IN SMOKE

MOTOR LORRIES BURNED EPIDEMIC ON COUNTRY ROAD. On the Rangitatau Watershed Highway recently there has been a veritable epidemic of motor lorry fires, two machines having been burned and another partially destroyed during the last fortnight. .In one instance Air Fraser Smith, of Kai Iwi, had loft two lorries loaded with firewood close to the road while he visited a farmer’s house about a mile away, and returned later to find that both had been destroyed. Another lorry to suffer was that of Air C. Furzakor. The driver in this case abandoned the machine when he attempted to drive through a roadside fire and found the smoko overpowering. When he returned the lorry was partially burned. Of these three machines two were not insured. During the last 12 months four other motor lorries and several cars hnve been destroyed by fire on the same highway.
