Zaghloul before his deal h. It has further been freely stated that Zaghloul’s personal resources were insufficient to account for the possession of such large sums as are alleged to have existed, amounts of £BO,OOO and £140,000 being mentioned. In her personal statement, Mme. Zaghloul refers in bitter terms to these “evil imputations” ami “contemptible falsehoods.” Her statement, she declares, is not addressed to the “slanderers,” but is issued out of consideration for the loyalty of the nation ami its leader. Explaining the amount of the personal fortune, Mme. Zaghloul states that £8,781 was derived from one-fourth of her late husband’s estate, which was her legal share, while she possesses also £14,779, representing the balance of revenues from an estate, inherited from her father, Mustafa Fahmi Pasha, since 1915, the sum including £1,928 in cash, bequeathed by her father, and £3.050 from the current year’s revenue, encashed after the death of her husband. The statement terminates with the solemn affirmation that she has not omitted to mention anything that she possessesAccording to the widow’s statement, Zaghloul Pasha left an estate valued nt nearly £35,000, whereas, according to certain Egyptian papers, ho was supposed to be a poor man, hence the demand for explanations made In the new Wald leader. On the other hand, Mustafa Fahmi is said to have died penniless, his estate being mortgage! to the Credit Foncier Bank, and ? sum of £BOO in cash left by him having been consumed by the payment of rhe land-tax. Jn the circumstances, Mme. Zaghloul’s statement is not likely to end the controversy, which i.s a sorrv sequel to the career of a leader who was so popular while he was alive.
