COLLEGE MATCH WANGANUI LOSES TO NEW PLYMOUTH. The annual cricket match Li'tween New Plymouth High School and the Wanganui Collegiate School commenced at New Plymouth on Wednesday and, finishing on Thursday, resulted in a win for the Taranaki school. The win was a narrow one, New Plymouth scoring only five more runs than the local team. The score sheet shows that the batting was not profitable for either side, but that the bomling was above the average. The highest score was made by Giescn, captain of the Wanganui team, with a total of 62 runs.
The New Plymouth captain showed a line sporting spirit when he called Giesen back to the crease after a doubtful decision. The first day’s play left everyone in doubt as to the result of the match and, indeed, it was not until the last few minutes that the game was decided. The following are the scores:— New Plymouth. Swainson captured one for 4; Arkwright three for 20; Oliver four for 13; Cameron one for 4; and A. F. Smith one for 0. Notes by “Short Leg/* It. was pleasant to see G. L. Alarshall’s return to form in what was probably Porewa’s last competition match this season, that, of the PorewaBroadway match on Wednesday last. The veteran scored 74 in good style, with w 7 ell-timed shots all round the wicket, and but for his contribution of 74 to a total of 152 the country team would have cut a sorry figure.
As it was they were three short and Ball (seven for 53) captured all the wickets. The wicket was bumping a bit with the result that the majority of the Porewa batsmen w r ere out to catches in the slips and at the wickets. Gould at second slip claimed three victims and A. N. Smith, the ’keper, two. D A. Cameron scored 25 in quick time and Lourio made merry in compiling 19 in about half that number of minutes. A. Fullerton-Smith (13) and Lambert (11) also played the
bowling with confidence. When Broadway’s next wicket fell, A. B. Innes being caught and bowled by Cameron, there w?re thirty odd runs on the board, of which number the outgoing batsman claimed one. A. V. Smith (41) was exceedingly unlucky in going out to a bail that got up shoulder high and after hitting him just dislodged the bail. Ball (31) played a bright innings until caught by Cameron off Swainson, wdio was the most successful bowler, taking six for 62.
