MATAHIWI
DANCE AND BAZAAR. [ Special “Chronicle” Service. ] A very successful dance and bqzaar organised by the Rat ana ladies’ charitable committee of Alatahiwi was held in the Alatahiwi Hall on Tuesday evening. The hall was beautifully decorated with streamers of many colours and the lights added a bright colour to the polished floor.
There was a record attendance, the largest gathering ever held locally, people riiling from as far as Jerusalem, Ranana, Koriniti, and Atenc. A great factor in the success of the evening was the presence of the Pamoana string orchestra under the leadership of Nepi Box, who played beautiful selections for the dances and accompaniments.
At the opening of the evening the local school girls rendered a chorus, “To Ope Tuatahi.” The blending of the voices was beautiful and many remarks wore made on the sweet voices of the children. They next gave a series of poi fiances, the best being known as the “Flax-Mill” double poi. It depicts the growing of flax, cutting down, tying up, carting, entering the mill ,thc working of machinery, the rolls of fibre and the sailing of one of the Home boats taking the big rolls of fibre to different parts of the world. All the movements were given in perfect time, and great credit is due to Mrs AV. Church for the able manner in which she has taught thorn to such a high standard.
The bazaar was successfully managed by Mrs Pine and Airs Ranginui, who are joint secretaries of the committee, assisted by Air R. Pirita. They had to work very hard, but were well repaid, and their pleasant smiles showed how pleased they wore with the proceedings, of the evening. Great credit is due to the joint secretaries for their hard work in making a pleasant evening. The ball was controlled by Air R. Pokiha as M.C. One and all had an enjoyable time and the call of the cows ended a very pleasant, enjoyable and successful evening. On the following day the loca Itennis club held a men’s douses handicap. The final was played between P. Ilaami and Major Steel, of Ranana, and AL Pokiha and J. Potaka, of Koriniti and Jerusalem. The Ranana double, having 12 on, won the last stroke and ended a very exciting finish by 41—40.
