FALLING BIRTH RATE
POSITION IN BRITAIN BABY BONUSES SUGGESTED. LONDON, March 4. To give bonuses for ail babiees is one of the proposals to chock the decrease in the British birthrate, which is at present the lowest in Europe. Several members of Parliament, assisted by demographists, are drawing attention to France’s success in combating the decrease. Their scheme includes a bonus for each baby and other maternity benefits, further reductions in income tax for families of four and over, and cheaper railway, bus and tram fares. It is also desired to give effect to the Queen’s appeal for concerted action to lesson maternal mortality, which is now between 3000 and 4000 a. year. Statisticians point out that 1,500,000 marriages in Britain are childless, and 2,500,000 result in only one child. The French National Alliance has begun a new campaign for more babies. Its report emphasises that the whole of Europe is committing race suicide. Babies are fewest in countries where sport is most popular. The birthrate has also sharply fallen in countries which have female suffrage, especially Germany and Norway.
