THE BUILDING TRADE
QUIET IN WANGANUI EXPECTED TO PICK UP SOON The building trade in Wanganui is slack at present, but as one prominent man in the trade remarked to a “Chronicle” man yesterday, there is no necessity for pessimism. He said that builders had had to dismiss hands, but this state of affairs was not peculiar to Wanganui. As far as he could judge Wellington was the only city that was experiencing activity in the trade. He mentioned that the present slump in operations locally was not likely to continue, as there was prospect of several large buildings being erected in the city in the near future.
Building permits issued during the month of November just ended reflect tho decline in business, when the figures arc compared with those of November, 1926. Details, with returns for the same month of the previous year in parentheses, are as follow: Now dwellings £7366 (£7290), alterations and additions £1427 (£6827), kiosk £475, church hall £B5O, other buildings £334 (£449), shops and offices —(£1016). Total £10,452 (£15,582).
