PROFICIENCY EXAMINATIONS. [ Special “ Chronicle ” Service ] In the proficiency examination held at St. Francis’ Convent this week, the following pupils were successful: —Bernard Dclaurier, Gertrude Atiey, Ruth Hendra, and Inez Larsen. The annual examinations for sixth standard pupils has just been concluded at Marton Junction School with very satisfactory results. During the year 20 scholars were presented tor examination and of these 19 gained proficiency certificates and the remaining one competency. The lists are as follow: — Proficiency—Cyril Calkin, Clarence Craig, Richmond Henderson, Karl Kelcher, Ronald Aloore, George Nuttall, Hector Poppe, Alvin. Rouiston, William Sanders, Donald Shaw, Robert Still, Gordon Trask, Elizabeth Bush, Jean Byres, Nancy Finlay, Jean Fyffe, Joan Hart, Leila Phillips, Myrt Slight. Competency —Stanley Sicely. MARTON COURT. At the Children’s Court at Marton, a boy 13 years of age, was committed to the charge of the superintendent of the Child Welfare for theft of a bicycle, and a Turakina boy was remanded until December 8 in the care of the superintendent for making indecent writings at Turakina. “ALIAS THE DEACON.” “Alias the Deacon,” which will be screened at the Marton Town Hall on Saturday next, is described as the biggest and most successful stage play of the decade. He arrived from nowhere and everywhere, made his way into the hearts of everyone, and went his way. A gentleman of the old school, “The Deacon” had a passion for gambling, and it made him an outcast. Jean Hcrsholt plays in the leading role and is supported by June Alarlowe, Ralph Graves and Myrtle Stedman. YOUNG HELPERS’ LEAGUE. The Marton Junction School habitation has just held the annual box opening for subscriptions to Dr. Barnardp’s i Homes, and as a result £6 14s has been forwarded to the New Zealand headquarters. Mrs Hempieman, hon. secretary, provided afternoon, tea for the helpers, aL ter which a very enjoyable children’s concert was held, items being contributed by Nellie and Edna Phillips, Lolah and Norine Haw, Norah and Frances Poppe, Dorothy Elcock, Denis Mann, Rona Smith and Una Borett.
