AMUSEMENTS AND MEETINGS

HIS MAJESTY’S THEATRE Photoplay fans like variety and colour in their screen diet. They have these qualities in the fullest degree in “The Belle of Broadway,” starring Betty Cornpsou. This production showing at His Majesty’s Theatre, reaches from Broadway to Paris without any stretch of the imagination, presenting one beauty spot and interesting complication after another. In “Bucking the Truth,” Pete Morrison portrays the sturdy hero for which he is known and runs his entire gamut of feats of the plains including his daredevil riding and roping. ‘ 1 ! Jghtning,” the famous horse is also seen in the production, in which lone Reed plays the heroine. “THE NAUGHTY WIFE” TO-NIGHT. Booking has commenced in earnest for the presentation this week of the I hilarious comedy, “The Naughty I Wife, ” the first performance of which !is to take place at the Opera House toi night, and continued till Friday night. The play, which is being produced by the Wanganui Musical and Dramatic Society, by special arrangement with J. C. Williamson Company, is regarded as being one of the best yet attempted by this popular society, and the box office figures should be very satisfactory. The staging is quite abnormal for Wanganui, and carries more pretentious scenery than has yet been attempted, so that the Society is doing its utmost to maintain the high prestige it has meritoriously gained in the past. This play has had a very successful season in London, when Miss Gladys Cooper played the leading role. The compilations that arise throughout the play create highly entertaining and laughable situations. The cast, [although a small one, includes such well-known artists as Mrs J. Beard (the Naughty Wife), Mr F. O. Bridgeman (Hilary Farrington), Mrs T. L. Sperring (Nora Gail), Mr Jeff Stewart (Darrell McKnight). The production is in the hands of Mr F. O. Bridgeman and to Wanganui audiences that is a sufficient guarantee that the comedy will be one of the best seen in the town since his last production of “What Happened to Jones.” The local Society has always endeavoured w bring performances up to the standard of first-class professional shows and in this production particularly no expense has been spared in staging and every effort made by the cast to make “The Naughty Wife” the outstanding success of the year. There is sure to be a large audience when the curtain goes up to-night. APPRENTICESHIP EVENING CLASSES In .1923 an Apprentices Act was passed and came into operation in April 1924. Some 11 apprenticeship committees were established in XVanganui, who immediately had apprenticeship orders prepared and approved of by the Arbitration Court; the orders provided for apprentices to attend evening trade classes at the local Technical School and during the past two years a large number of apprentices have attended regularly and recently underwent an examination in the various subjects. As a result it has been decided to present a number of gold, silver and bronze medals, together with certificates, to successful students and by an advertisement in the columns of this paper, all apprentices, parents and those interested in the training of apprenticesare invited to be present at the prize and certificate giving, which will be held at the Technical College, on Wednesday at 8 p.m. (summer-time). SCHOOL CONCERT AT WANGANUI EAST To-night the children of Wanganui East are giving a grand variety concert in aid of the School Committee’s Ground Improvement Funds. Interesting items in dance, song anidj story, together with instrumental attractions, should satisfy the tastes of young and old, and at the reasonable prices charged the hall should be packed. THE DUCHESS THEATRE (Aramoho) “A Hero of the Big Snows,” the new Rin-Tin-Tin picture screening at The Duchess Theatre to-night and tomorrow night includes Alice Calhoun, Don Alvarado, Leo Wills and Mary Jane Milliken in the cast. The story by Ewart Adamson, has the Canadian woods as its locale, and deals with a young wastrel, Ed Nolan, who saves Rin-Tin-Tin from the brutality of a trapper. Rinty strikes up a friendship with a dog belonging to Mary Mallory, a pretty and plucky Canadian girl, and Ed finds the girl a good influence on his unhappy existence. When Mary’s baby sister falls ill and she starts out in a severe snowstorm for the doctor, Rinty aids her, and, in a thrilling fight with a wolf pack, brings the girl safely to her destination.

Rinty has been suspected of injuring the child, but in reality had rescued her from the attack of a wolf. His loyalty and bravery vindicates him of the suspicion, he saves the child, and brings together the two young lovers after a series of thrilling incidents and encounters a starving pack of wolves. This is said to be the most exciting as well as most beautiful of Rin-Tin-Tin’s pictures, and those who saw him in “Below the Line,” “The Clash of the Wolves,” and “The Night Cry,” his recent Master Picture, will realise that he has a high standard of entertainment to surpass.

An excellent supporting programme will be screened. A big matinee will be held to-morrow afternoon.
