THIRTY NEW CRUISERS

AMERICA’S PROGRAMME HEAVY EXPENDITURE PROPOSED (A. & N.Z.) WASHINGTON, Nov. 5. Mr Britten, representing the House Naval Committee, announces that a five-year building programme, providing for 30 additional 10,000-ton cruisers, and five aeroplane carriers, involving a total expenditure of 400,000,000 dollars, will be proposed to Congress during the December session. Mr Britten contends it is the duty of the United States to enlarge the navy within the limits of the Washington Treaty, and believes steps in that direction should be taken immediately. He says the cruiser strength of Britain and Japan is growing.
