SEVERE CRITICISM
THE ABBEY PROPOSALS “WEEDING OUT” SUGGESTED. (A. & N.Z.) LONDON, Nov. 6. “Leave the Abbey alone” is the almost unanimous comment on the Abbey report. One expert emphasises that if plans are required all the architects of the Empire should be invited to compete, since Westminster Abbey is an Empire heritage. Scathing comments arc being made about many of the existing effigies, stated to represent nonentities, unworthy people, and even disreputable characters. It is suggested that the Abbey should be weeded out, when there ‘would be plenty of room for really famous persons. It is even asked why there are any Abbey monuments at all.
Sir Martin Conway suggests that there is sufficient space in the existing cloisters for centuries of memorials. It is declared that a modern annexe could only be an imitation, which would be vandalism, while a new north aisle is ruled out because it woulfl completely alter the exterior of the Abbey as it is known throughout the world.
