NEW BLOOD
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE REMEDY FOR LETHARGY The Wanganui Chamber of Commerce requires an infusion of new blood. This opinion was strongly expressed at evening’s meeting of mat body when) several speakers pointed out the necesu sity for support by businessmen whose interests were centred in the city. Mr A. E. Rankin said there was not nearly enough support received from the principals of businesses which had their headquarters in Wanganui. It was all very well for people to say that the Chamber of Commerce comprised of a lot of “old women,” but if they were not satisfied with the work that the Chamber was doing those criticising should put their shoulders to the wheel. The work of the chamber was left to a few stalwarts, but he hoped that at the annual meeting to bo held in December, it would be found that new blood would be infused. Mr T. H. Rice referred to the many important matters which the chamber had attended to without receiving any support from the heads of large businesses in the city. They complained when the Government passed legislation that did not suit them, but did not give the chamber a hand to combat any damaging move.
The chairman, Mr J. Coull, pointed out that the chamber’s membership was a large one, as* large in fact as that of the city of Dunedin, but tho number offering themselves »or work on the executive was small.
