TAYLORVILLE BANK

Sir, —In one of your recent issues it was announced that Mr N. Crofton Stavcley (city engineer) and Mr J. S. Longton Deem (assistant city engineer), in conjunction with Mr R. R. Dawson (Wanganui County Council engineer), were to confer as to the best means by. which the Taylorville bank could be reinstated.

Might I be allowed to suggest that 'i practical man be invited to confer with the engineers? His practical advice might assist in saving the City and County Councils thousands of pounds. In the recent Arapuni discussion in the House, the Premier said: —“But it was often found, in cases of professional disputes, that a layman could come in and make a satisfactory settlement.” A greater truth was never expounded. The bank should easily be repaired at a cost of not exceeding £2500 to £3OOO. As an ordinary layman, my idea would be, firstly, to employ a diver, and find out if it were possible to drive reinforced concrete piles into the foundation. If possible, then to drive a row of piles, three feet apart, to low water height along the frontage. Then make a number of rc-inforced concrete sheets, about 9ft. by 4ft. by six inches, place them securely against the piles, and fill in with stiff clay, grading the top to road level at the same angle as the present bank. You would have a completed job thca that would last for *1 century, and not at a very great cost. I JOE. November 7.
