FAT DEFICIENCY

THE QUALITY OF MILK LIABILITY ON VENDORS. “There is an absolute liability on the. vendor, and those who go into the milk business, that they should understand it,” said Mr J. S. Barton, S.M., yesterday in the Wanganui Magistrate’s Court in commenting on the case in which M. and D. Luff were charged with selling milk which did not comply with the standard of milk fat, in that it contained less than 3.25 per cent, of fat. For the defence, Mr R. Withers stated that four gallons of milk were sold a day, and about three had been sold when the inspector called. No doubt the milk had not been adequately agitated when sales were made, and this left less butter-fat in. the bottom of the can.

A fine of £1 (with 10s costs, 15s witness ’ expenses, and analyst’s fee) was imposed.
