DAM CONCESSION

AN AMERICAN REPORT CONCESSION IN ABYSSINIA (A. & N.Z.) LONDON, Nov. 4. A cablegram from America, stating that an American enginering corporation has received a concession to build a dam at Lake Tsana, Abyssinia, finds little credence in well-informed Lonlon circles. It is not thought any such arrange- - ment could have been made with the knowledge of the Abyssinian Government, since under the treaty of May, 1902, concluded with the Emperor Monelik 11., that Emperor agreed 4 4 not to construct, or allow to be constructed, any work across the Blue Nile, Lake Tsana, or »Sobat, which would arrest the ’flow of thetir waters into the Nile, except on agreement with his Britannic Majesty’s Government and the Government of Sudan.” The Abyssinian Government has not approached the British. Government in regard to any such project as that mentioned in the Amoricu telegram. Great Britain, with her preponderating interest in Egypt and Sudan, has tor many years been at pains to obtain an undertaking from all neighbouring Powers to refrain from any actions which might diminish the volume of water in the Nile and its tributaries, which constitutes a vital factor in the prosperity of Egypt and Sudan.
