PUBLIC WORKS
DEBATE IN THE HOUSE RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION. [Per AinoeiaHmi.r WELLINGTON, Nov. 5. After the telegraph office closed this morning, the Minister of Public Works continued his reply to the debate on the Public Works Statement. With regard to the disparity of th© vote for railways between the North and South Islands, he said that the reason for that was that the greatest majority of men were employed in the North Island, and he considered that it was better to keep them there and push on with the work at present in hand, rather than spread them all over the country. Nevertheless, the Buller Gorge railway would be pushed on with all speed, consistent with the money available. The motion that the Public Works Statement be referred to the Government for consideration was agreed to, and votes aggregating £7,713,250, were agreed to without a discussion. The House rose at 2.20 a.m. till 7.30 p.m. on Monday.
