A PERMANENT BOARD

RELIEF OF UNEMPLOYMENT QUESTION UNDER CONSIDEBATION. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 4. Replying to Mr P. Fraser (Wellington Central) in the House of Representatives to-day, the Hon. G. J. Anderson (Minister of Labour) said a Cabinet committee was still considering the question of setting up a permanent unemployment board which should build up a fund on a contribut ory basis out of which the unemployment problem might reecivt some attention. Inquiries into the actuarial position of' such a fund were still in progress, he said, and nothing further could be said on. the subject at present. Later when the Minister of Public Works moved that the Public Works Statement be referred to the Government for consideration Mr D. G. Sullivan (Avon) urged that in view of the seriousness of unemployment during the past winter, the Public Works Department should look ahead and plan its programme of works, so that if next winter should unfortunately find tne economic position still bad, some work shoulrl be available for those who happened to be out of work. Unemployment should be as a national question and the various employing Departments ought to organise programmes to meet the requirements of the work Jess.
