AN OLD RESIDENT

DEATH OF MR. R. TINGEY FOUNDATION MEMBER OF WELLKNOWN FIRM News was received in Wanganui yesterday of the death at Wellington of Mr Richard Tingey, one of the oldest figures in the business life of this city. , Air Tingey, with his twin brother Edward, launched the now well-known business of R. and E. Tingey, in the year 1868, opening up in premises in Taupo Quay on the site at present occupied by Messrs Hatrick and Co. In the following year they extended their operations to Wellington, Mr Edward Tingey taking control of the Wanganui business and Mr Richard Tingey subsequently taking control at Wellington. Later a third brancn was commenced in Palmerston North under the direction of another brother, Mr Albert Tingey, but after some years the Palmerston Norfh business was sold, the firm extending its operations to Auckland and Christchurch. Almost up to the time of his death Air Richard Tingey took a lively and active interest in the business which had had the benefit of his guidance during so many years, although members of the two families had latterly assumed the more active administration of the firm’s affairs.

Mr Tingey was of a kind and genial disposition and leaves many friends in all parts of the Dominion. Ho was a well-known churchman and a keen bowler, and as a member of the Veterans’ Association he will be greatly missed.
