TEXTILE’S CAULFIELD CUP V.A.T.C. MEETING CONCLUDES PENTAGRAM FALLS IN STEEPLES Received Oct., 36, 5.5 p.m. (A. & N.Z.) MELBOURNE, Oct. 16. The weather was line and warm for the V.A.T.C. races and the going was good. There,, was an enormous attendance, including the Governor-General, Lord Stonehaven, many inter-Statc visitors, and a few Now Zealanders. There was an exciting finish in the Hurdle race. Bright Sword finished well and beat the pacemaker, Sir Gleam, in the last twenty yards. Salzach was always prominent and won the Nursery brilliantly. Salzach cost 1100 guineas as a yearling and is a half-brother to Bairn. The New Zealander Pentagram fell when leading at the third fence in the Steeplechase. Woomera led the rest of the journey and won comfortably. He is a brother of the crack jumper Balbi. The Caulfield. Cup Race. Textile, finishing with a phenomenal run in the Cup, scored a brilliant win Affirm made a great effort, leading all the way. Star D‘Or finished well but was unlucky in the running. He was ridden by A. Reed. Textile was bred in South Australia and is trained by E. O'Dwyer. He is owned by Messrs Colin Brown and M. McLean. Textile won the Toorak Handicap last Saturday and was ridden by AV. Scanlon. He started with a great run, was interfered with slightly once, but waited and put in a run on the rails at turn. Then the race was all over.

W. Duncan said Royal Charter was never out of trouble. Scanlon is a native of Wagga and is nineteen years old. Mr McLean bought a half-share in Textile recently for £750. Ex-New Zealand Trainer.

Loniccra was always prominent and won the Burwood Handicap nicely. She Yvas trained by the former New Zealander, Dave Price, and was ridden by Daniels who scored his fourth win»of the meeting.

The imported Quirk, after being in the picture all the way, finished best in the Windsor Handicap, winning nicely. He is owned and trained by Eric Connolly and was piloted by the Sydney horseman Bartie. Results:

Valaisan gave a lot of trouble at the start and lost ground, chasing the field. Affirm took charge at the start and led out into the straight, followed by Spear Ma’den, Royal Charter and Bunkie, with Textile and Star D’Or near the rear. Near the seven furlongs Valorem took second place with Bunkie, Royal Charter, Cairncross, Imitator and Devonshire handy. Commencing* the last six furlongs Affirm was a length in front, next being Valorem, Spear Maiden, Imitator Bunkie, Cairncross anj Thracian, with Textile moving up on the inside. Affirm led round the turn and was first into the straight, but Textile came with a great run on the rails and won by a length and a quarter, Star D ’Or finishing well two lengths away. Then came Sun Morn, Valorem, Devonshire, Bunkie, Bombard, Spcarsct and Beedos. The last two were Three Kings and Valaisan. Time 2.32 i. Fractional times were; First four 51, next two 24}, suc-

ceeding two 25}, last four 514. Burwood Handicap. —Lonicera 7.9 1, Farrago 8.7 2, Pitoota 8.4 3. Sixteen started. Length; head. Rudyard was fourth. Time 1.54}.

Windsor Handicap.—Quirk 8.3 1, Highland 8.5 2, Cheeosan 7.11 3. Fourteen started. Two lengths; half a length. Time 1.12}.

BACK TO NEW ZEALAND BIG DOMINION CONTINGENT HORSES, OVCNERS AND JOCKEYS. (A. & N.Z.) SYDNEY, Oct. 15. A big contingent of New Zealand racehorses, including Limerick, Battlement, Piuthair, Clarinda, Tariffff, Arikiwai, and Rosccrea left for New ZeaI land by the Ulimaroa. The passengers included Messrs H. A. Knight and A. McKenzie, and the jockeys E. Manson, J. Barry and H. Burt. TRAINER’S DEATH HAWKE’S BAY MENTOR PASSES (Per Preafl Association.) HASTINGS, Oct. 15. The death is announced of Mr H. Hickey, the veteran horse-trainer, who I was seriously injured on Thursday 1 morning as the result of a fall while exercising Admiral Codrington.
