COSGRAVE’S FATE
VOTE TO-MORROW DE VALERAITES’ MOTION. (A. & N.Z.) LONDON, Aug. 12. There was not anything like the interest that might be expected in Dublin regarding the meeting of the Dail Eireann. With the exception of a full gallery, a small body of police, and a moderate crowd outside Parliament, the atmosphere was normal. The De Valeraites arrived at the House in the morning and conferred at length with the Labourites. When the Daily assembled “Business as usual” was the keynote of the proceedings, Ministers answering questions. Then Mr Johnson asked if the House would have the opportunity of raising the question of confidence in the Government.
Mr Cosgrave replied: ”1 understand that a deputy gave notice of that yesterday. We are certainly willing to take a vote on Tuesday.” The Dail thereupon adjourned till Tuesday next. THE NATIONALISTS WHOM WILL THEY FOLLOW? SPECULATION RIFE. Received Aug. 14, 5.5 p.m. (A.&N.Z.) LONDON, Aug. 13. Captain Redmond, Leader of the National Party in the Dail, after a meeting of the party, denied reported dissensions and declared a unanimous decision had been reached, which would be revealed only after the debate on Tuesday. It is the general opinion that the fate of Mr. Cosgrave’s Cabinet is in Captain Redmond’s hands, and there is a growing belief that he and his party will not ally themselves with the Labourites or the De Valeraites.
Mr. Cosgrave has displayed a magnanimous attitude towards the new opposition. In an interview he stated: “I am very pleased that the Fianna Fail deputies are coming into the Dail. It is the best thing that has happened during the last five years.” Captain Redmond said the action of Mr. De Valera and his party in taking the oath was an immense gain to the cause of constitutionalism. May Not Vote The latest Dublin telegrams mention the possibility of the National Party not voting, in which event an even vote is possible, and the Speaker’s casting vote would decide the issue.
