COAL EXPLOSIONS

SEVERAL THEORIES DETONATOR OR MINERAL DEPOSIT? . A family at Castlecliff were startled on Saturday evening by a report like a rifle shot and the kitchen was found to be filled- with smoke and flying soot. An explosion had* occurred in the fire box of the range, cracking the top of the stove and flinging a tin kettle to the floor. Several similar explosions have occurred recently in the Dominion and with regard to one in Wellington the theory was advanced that a mineral substance sometimes was found in coal and caused explosions when subjected to heat. Fortunately this element is rarely found. Another theory is that unexplod-ed detonators may have been left in the coal When it was trucked from the mine. • .
