Mr Joseph O’Mara, the noted Irish operatic tenor, has died, according to a London cablegram. An Invercargill telegram announces the death of Mr George Polson, Inspector of the Public Works Department, aged 54. He leaves a widow and six children. * A civic reception was tendered the Rev. James Barr, M.P., by the Mayor (Mr W. J. Rogers) yesterday. Mr Barr who has been staying with the Rev. John Paterson, leaves Wanganui today. Guests at Foster’s Hotel are Messrs J. G. L. Howitt, S.M. (Marton), F. Lincoln and C. Lawford (Auckland), T. J. Bethel] (Palmerston North), P. W. Gollan (Wellington). A British official wireless message reports that Lieut.-General Sir W. Gillman has been appointed Master-General of Ordnance in succession to Sir J. Noel Birch, whose term of office expires on September 30. A well known resident of Feilding, Mr William Lourie, proprietor of the Empire Stables, died at the Palmerston Hospital on Sunday morning. He leaves a widow and two grown-up children, Mrs Z. Lourie and Mr R. Lourie. Visitors to Wanganui who are staying at the Rutland Hotel arc Messrs H. Gentles, J. A. McCaskey, JVfr and Mrs J. Irvine, Messrs C. A. Chisholm, A. Stewart, J. Leuchars and M. G. Hiddleston (Wellington), Mr S. Brewer (Waitotara), Mrs H. Brown (Raetihi), Mr E. N. Andrews (Christchurch), and T. Taylor (Wellington. After 31 years’ contirfiious service as leading hand, Mr A. Higgins has retired from the employ of the City Council. He was farewelled by his follow em-' ployees on Friday afternoon. The Mayor (Mr W. J. Rogers), on behalf of the staff, presented Mr Higgins with a set of pipes and an umbrella and wished him many pleasant years of retirement. The City Engineer (Mr N. Crofton Staveley) paid a tribute to Mr Higgins, who, he said, was one of the most conscientious workers the Council had.
