DIFFICULTIES

FREE STATE POLITICS Mr. Cosgrave Will Have to Seek a Coalition DE VALERA’S INTENTIONS [By Telegraph—Per Press Assn.—Copyright.] Received June 15, 9.30 p.m. (The Times) LONDON, June 14. Free State Final election results, apart from the National and Dublin Universities’ returns shows the following:— Government 45 De Valeraites 44 Labour 22 Independants 12 Farmers 11 National League 8 Sinn Fein 5 The Daily Telegraph says: “If the Republicans dispute the fact that they fought the elections against the oath and decided to take it on the pretext that that was the best way to get rid of it, a difficult situation will be created, as Mr Cosgrave will be driven to seek an effective Coalition. It is hoped therefore, for the sake of peace in the Free State that the Republicans will continue in a state of desperate intransigence and by still refusing to enter the Dail, will make it easier for Mr Cosgrave to pursue his courageous task. ’ ’ The Times states that the Free State Ministers while disappointed with the results of the elections, will face the situation without alarm. Undoubtedly the new Dail will meet according to plan on June 23, and arrangements are being made for ensuring a safe constitutional majority for the Cosgrave Government. Later Mr De Valera states that the Republicans will claim their seats. The people, he said would not tolerate their being barred by the imposition of the penal oath.
