OHAKUNE

OHAKUNE BOROUGH COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held on Thursday evening. Present, the Mayor (Mr G e J. Goldfinch), Crs. Christie, Taylor, Mahony, Cody, Jones, Clemett and Herbert. Mr W. H. Poynter, applied for billiard saloon license. —It was resolved that the application be deferred until next meeting. Mr E. O. Lightband protested against the extension of the gravel pit, owing to it being a source of danger. —Referred to the works committee, Mr M. B. Clerk and Mrs De Joux applied for building permits for motor sheds.—Granted. A letter was received from the Highways Board re the Raetihi—Ohakune road maintenance, stating that this portion was not being maintained as it should be, and if such were the case subsidy money would be withheld, —lt was resolved that the clerk reply to Board stating that the road was being attended to under the supervision of the Public Works Department. The Waimarino Acclimatisation Society wrote re swans for lakes Domain. White swans were quoted at £7 7s per pair and black at £1 Is. It was resolved that further information be asked for. The picture proprietors wrote forwarding monthly returns for Sunday pictures. The junction showed a profit of 19s which it was decided to donate to the Plunket Society. The Patriotic Pictures showed a profit of £1 5s 9d, which is to be donated to Waimarino Brass Band. Cr. Jones moved that the approach to the bridge below King’s Court be made safe for light traffic and that proper notices be put up.—Carried. Cr Christie stated that he and the foreman had visited the Ohakune Domain and found it impossible to cut the grass there, but small tussocks had been adzed out and they (bought it advisable to put sheep on for a few days. Cr. Cody asked if it was possible to keep street lights on in the winter until 6.30 a.m. so as to allow those going to work, thje benefit of the light.

SUNDAY PICTURES. At last meeting of the Ohakune Borough Council the matter of Sunday pictures was brought up. Cr Cody moved that the picture proprietors be notified that if these picture shows could not show a profit of at least £1 per week, their applications to show pictures on Sunday for charity, be reconsidered. This was* seconded by Cr. Christie, who considered that if they gave permission to picture proprietors to open for business, they should allow all other businesses to open, providing they devoted the profits to charity. He thought that the clause of £1 a week should be deleted and that their licenses be cancelled for Sunday nights. Cr Clemett and the Mayor also spoke on the matter. Cr Cody’s motion was unanimously carried.
