REGIMENTAL STANDARD

Sir, —In your issue of June .10, I notice a reference to an effort being made by the officers of the Queen Alexandra's Own Mounted Rifles to procure a standard for the regiment. It is also stated that the regiment has assimilated the various old mounted units —Alexandra Cavalry, Wairoa Light Horse, Hawera, Stratford and Opunake Mounted Rifles. Mention is also made that the Wairoas purchased a flag 46 years ago. I may remind those working for a standard that the Alexandra Cavalry also had a flag which was subscribed for by the ladies of the Wanganui district and presented to the troop by the late Colonel Noake (then in command of the district) over fifty years ago, the said flag being approved by the authorities. That flag is still in existence and is in the possession of one of the old members. I don’t think the old mother corps should be left out in the cold. In 1919, the regiment had a flag which was in camp with men of the Mounted Rifles Regiment of the Main Body in Awapuni camp. That flag was taken by the regiment to Egypt and was left there when it went to Gallipoli. Where is that flag? Surely records could be looked up and that standard traced! I wish the regiment every success, but I do think the old flags should be honoured. OLD-TIME TROOPER. June 10.
