STOLE JEWELLERY

WHILE BABY SLEPT DARING MELBOURNE THIEF, MELBOURNE, April 23. A baby slept last night within a foot of the spot from which n thief stole £l5O worth of jewellery in the bedroom of Mrs. S. D. Smith, 56 Nimnio Street, Middle Park. When the robbery was discovered this morning there were no signs of anything having been disturbed. Th 3 window, which has been open a few inches, was as it had been. The top had been replaced on the jewel case. From a handbag £7 had been stolen, but the handbag had been put back is it was. There were never fewer than five people in the house. Mrs. Smith took off her diamond pendant and two diamond brooches when she came home last night at six o’clock. She put them in a glass case on the dressing table. She did not take off her rings uni.l 10 p.m. This morning the rings were still in the case. She therefore believes that the theft was committe’ between six and ten o’clock last nigh’. At nine o’clock Mr. and Mrs. Smith went out to drive Mr. Smith’s motlu-r home. They were away about nn hour. When Mrs. Smith came to her door she was not able to open il. Sho believes now that the intruder was holding it on the other side. She called out to the family inside, and her se'ventecn-year-okl daughter cfame and opened the door. Its lock was not secured on the inside, as Mrs. Smith had thought il was. Mrs. Smith thinks that the intruder was in the house when she came horn • at six o’clock, and that he remained hidden until she had taken off her jewellery. The jewellery was insured. Souih Melbourne plain-clothes police are investigating.
