DAIRY PRODUCE SALES
A MONOPOLY IN AMERICA. — Cabled advice received by Messrs' Leonard and Son. dairy produce mcr-| chants, concerning the request of one, of the largest of the Dairy Produce! Board’s allottees for an increased allotment of New Zealand butter is of in-1 tercst in providing some details of what the chairman of the board, Mr W.j i>rounds, has referred to as an extra-1 ordinary position, an analysis of which should yield helpful information. When Mr Grounds made reference in the April issue of the* Dairy Produce Exporter to the fact that this particular firm had sold all its allotments, not-j withstanding price fixation, and thati t was asking for more, advice on the; subject was sought by Messrs Leonard' md Son of their principal, Mr F. H. Leonard, who is now in London. Recently the following reply was re-, ceived: — “The position is easily understood jwing to preferential treatment by the hoard giving this firm 3 per cent, commission and a monopoly of all sales in America, free from competition. These terms enabled them to cut their commission to the English multiple shopawners and thus enabled them to dear easily the balance of their stocks after ieducting the quantities sold in America. ’ 1
